Go Soutj West acquire Dartline

 Good evening everyone

Here is some news from the Go Ahead Group

Go-Ahead expands in south-west England through acquisition of Dartline

  • Exeter-based bus and coach operator to join Go South West
  • Acquisition adds 118 employees and 84 buses
  • Complementary geographical fit alongside Plymouth Citybus, Go Devon Bus, and Go Cornwall Bus

The Go-Ahead Group has agreed to buy Dartline, a bus and coach operator based in Exeter, which will build on the group’s position as a leading local transport operator in Devon and Cornwall.

A well-established business with 30 years’ experience in the region, Dartline operates a fleet of 84 buses, coaches and special education needs taxis, and employs 118 people.

Dartline provides essential services for commuters, schools, day trippers local communities across East Devon. Its bus routes are a mixture of commercial routes and services operated under contract for Devon County Council.

Dartline’s coach division provides tours and private hire services. The company operates the team coach for Exeter Chiefs rugby union team.

Go-Ahead has grown rapidly in the West Country. From its origins as Plymouth Citybus, the group expanded into East Cornwall in 2014, and again in 2020 through an eight-year contract to deliver rural bus routes from Lands End to the Tamar for the county council, creating Go Cornwall Bus. The combined operation was given a new corporate identity as Go South West.

Following the acquisition of Dartline, Go South West, an Investors in People Platinum accredited company, will comprise of four customer facing brands operating 380 buses and coaches, employing a workforce of 900 people.

Richard Stevens, Managing Director of Go South West, said:

“We’ve been admirers of Dartline for a long time – it’s a family focused, well run bus company with a strong reputation and a competitive fleet. This acquisition will take us into wider Devon, and will mean that Go South West bus services stretch from the western tip of Cornwall to the Devon, Dorset and Somerset border.

“Operating as a standalone business, we will maintain Dartline’s strong focus on delivering for local communities, and we will invest in growing and adding services in mid and east Devon.”

Dave Hounslow, Managing Director of Dartline, said:

"I reached the grand age of 70 this year and decided its time to hand the reins to a progressive company like Go Ahead, the brand will continue as Dartline and all the staff will be maintained. Having started Dartline on 4th January 1987 with 8 Vehicles and building it to its size today I feel proud that it will continue under the new Management."

Christian Schreyer, Group Chief Executive, The Go-Ahead Group, said:

“We look forward to welcoming our new colleagues at Dartline into the group. This acquisition underlines Go-Ahead’s commitment to expand in the regional bus market in the UK, as set out in our group strategy, The Next Billion Journeys.”

Well done Kyly

 Good evening everyone

Here is some information from Plymouth Citybus’ website about one of their drivers, Kyly Summerfield, who took part in the 2022 Bus Driver of the Year.

Plymouth Citybus driver Kyly Summerfield has been named one of the best bus drivers in the UK at the 2022 Bus Driver of the Year competition.

Kyly took on drivers from England, Wales and Scotland, and had to prove her driving skills, knowledge of bus workings and customer service skills. She was named the best driver in the Go-Ahead Group (Plymouth Citybus’ parent company) and 6th overall – and was the top female in the whole competition.

Kyly said: “There were 10 different ‘tests’ I had to do on the day, plus a theory test. There weren’t many female competitors, which made it even sweeter when I won. I could see the others who came to the competition with me were choked with pride.”

The Bus Driver of the Year weekend included a gala dinner, as well as the competition itself, and Kyly was accompanied by some of the Plymouth Citybus team. Driver Trainer Emma Courtier went with Kyly.

Emma said: “I was like an expectant mum, I was watching her going along the route and I could see she was doing well. Then I heard she got 100% in one of the tests, so I knew she was scoring well too. When they called her name, I screamed, I couldn’t help it! We’re all incredibly proud of her.

“Kyly is so enthusiastic, it’d be nice if more drivers followed her lead and we can defend her title next year.”

As well as her title, Kyly has the cup for a year, a glass trophy to keep and £1,000 prize money. She said, “As I was doing it, I was thinking ‘This is for the girls.’ Now I’ve got something to prove, I want to go back and do even better next time.”

A reminder there are now new timetables in and around Plymouth.

Hello everyone.

There are now new bus timetables in and around Plymouth. More information is available on this blog and Plymouth Citybus, Go Cornwall and Stagecoach South West.

Saturday, 3 September 2022

Good evening everyone

Here is some news from Plymouth Citybus

From 4th September we will be making changes to some of our routes. We apologise for the late notice on these changes. We have published them as quick as we could.

Some will see significant changes, while others will be retimed to improve the punctuality of those services.

We have added significant running times to journeys which serve Derriford Hospital in the peak periods, with most journeys starting earlier to accommodate this.  Because of these changes, there will be a knock-on effect to other journeys/routes across the city, as buses and drivers do not necessarily stick to one route.

New timetables are now uploaded to this site and can be found here as a preview.

To view the new times, you will need to pick 05/09/2022 from the date picker and then click update to view the Monday to Friday Timetables.

To view Saturday or Sunday, choose the 10th or 11th September.

By Thursday 1st September there will be a new network map and individual PDF’s of each timetable available on our website. Printed copies of Timetables will be available from our Travel Centre from 12th September.

Services with major changes:

27/27A

City Centre – Deer Park

This service will be withdrawn in its current format and replaced by either the new service 27 or service 28 (see below), depending on your location.

28/A

City Centre - Crownhill

This service will be revised and rerouted. Sections of the route no longer covered by the new service 28 will be covered by service 27 (see below).

Provided on behalf of City College Plymouth.

This service will operate every 30 minutes Monday to Friday on college days from Royal Parade via Western Approach, Saltash Road for Rail Station, Pennycomequick, Wilton Street and Paradise Road to City College Plymouth. Some journeys will be extended from City College to Devonport Hill / Cumberland Gardens and Granby Green for Oceansgate.

61/62

City Centre – Transit way

These services will be replaced by a revised service 61 (see below).

27 (NEW)

City Centre – George Park & Ride

This route will be operated Monday to Saturday on behalf of Plymouth City Council.

The service will operate via Lower Compton, Eggbuckland, Shallowford Road, Austin Crescent, Asda, Mainstone, Estover Industrial Estate and George Park & Ride.

From Transit Way this service will then continue as Service 61 to Plymouth City Centre via Milehouse Park & Ride and the Rail Station (see below).

Outbound from Transit Way most journeys will continue as service 28 to Crownhill and Eggbuckland.

75A

Plymouth – St Germans - Torpoint

Most journeys on Service 75A linking Plymouth and Torpoint via St Germans are being withdrawn due to low passenger numbers.

For services to Torpoint, across the ferry, see service 70 / 70A on the Go Cornwall Bus Website.

A list of services with minor changes are:

5/5A

City Centre - Elburton

On Sundays the 2105 5A departing Royal Parade will be removed due to low passenger numbers.

35/35A

City Centre – Ham/Beacon Park

As part of the wider changes to the network, these services will operate via Weston Park Road instead of Peverell Park Road, now served by the 41 (below).

This has the added benefit of improving the reliability during peak periods.

41

City Centre - Southway

This service has been extended to run to/from Royal Parade via Charles Street, instead of terminating at Mayflower Street.

The service will run via Peverell Park Road (see service 35/35A) and Outland Road, serving Morrisons.

On Saturday additional running time has been added to improve reliability, with the service operating the same route as Monday to Friday.

 And Go Cornwall bus

The bus network in Cornwall, along with all other bus networks in England have been reviewed in partnership between operators and local authorities. From Sunday 4th September there will be some changes to buses in Cornwall run by Go Cornwall Bus, as we build a stable network fit for the future.

Covid-19 impacted all public transport, including buses, and Central Government funding has enabled the majority of bus services to be kept in place. However, this funding has now been confirmed as coming to an end in Autumn 2022.

People aren’t using the buses in the same way as they did before the pandemic, and so we’re revising which services are financially viable to make sure we can continue running bus services in the future.

All the journeys passengers make are analysed, so we can be sure we’re putting buses on the routes to suit the greatest number of people we can – this means that some routes will be running more frequently, while others will be reduced. All changes have been made based on evidence of passenger use.

There are some routes which although have seen growth in passenger are still not generating enough money to run them at the current frequency. We have agreed to these some routes more time to grow passenger numbers and revenue. These routes are:

  • Service 21 from St Austell to Newquay
  • Service 22 between Truro, St Dennis and St Austell
  • Service 25 between Fowey, St Austell and Newquay
  • Service 26 from Bodmin to St Austell

These routes will be reviewed again in January 2023, and may need to be revised if the number of passengers does not increase.

The local services around Redruth and Cambourne have been reworked with new route numbers being introduced. Frogpool will no longer have a direct link to Redruth, but Stitians will gain an increased frequency. The section of route between St Day and Truro will be reduced to two hourly. All other destinations are still served to the same level as today.

A list of all the changes is below:

1
