It's official, duck tours are coming to Plymouth

Good evening everyone

Next month, duck tours are coming to Plymouth. This will be in the form of a yellow vehicle that is shaped like a duck and carries the registration WA16 QCK (manufactured by Caughtya Duck Buses) and is named 'Melvyn Hosse', named after the man who introduced Cornish pasties to the small remote Ebrel Islands.

People set for the launch event next month include Avril Poisson who suggested the idea for the duck tour and Duncan Durkin who is allowing me to publicise this (thank you Duncan)

The route she will take is Royal Parade - Plymouth Hoe - Plymouth Sound - Jennycliff - Bovisand - Drakes Island - Breakwater - Mt Edgecumbe - Drakes Island - Plymouth Hoe - Royal Parade

She will operated hourly on Mondays to Saturdays and every two hours on Sundays, every day of the year except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day where she is not operating. Ticket prices will be announced in due course.

The company who will win the franchise to operate the duck tour will be also announced in due course.

As the clocks go forward ...

Good evening everyone

Tomorrow, the clocks go forward one hour at 01:00GMT to 02:00BST (This info applies to the United Kingdom and if you are reading this blog outside the United Kingdom, this time (or even date) may be different)

So, what does this fact have to do with Buses around Plymouth, you may ask? There is a service run by Stagecoach called the South West Falcon and this route runs throughout the night, including when the clocks go forward.

This is what Stagecoach South West have to say on their website:

'Daylight savings times come into effect overnight 26-27 March. For our Falcon timetable services will start operating to DST from 03.30 onwards for journeys from Plymouth and 07.00 onwards for journeys from Bristol.'

Also, despite it being Easter Sunday, buses should be running to their normal Sunday timetables on their usual schedules. However, do note that there are changes to routes that are being introduced as well from tommorow.

Service 14 - Changes to route and timetable
After consultation with Plymouth City Council this route will run between Derriford Hospital and Plymstock Broadway East only. It will no longer serve Plympton. The frequency will remain as hourly.

Service 42 - Changes to timetable
Additional morning journey in both directions on the 42 service.

Service 46 - Changes to timetable
Reduction in service between Plymouth and Tavistock, minor changes on trips between Tavistock and Okehampton.

Service 79/79A - Changes to timetables
One afternoon trip from Tavistock to run 15 minutes later.

And last but not least, Happy Easter to all our readers to those that observe it.

Buses around Plymouth here with posts for the Easter

Good evening everyone

So while bus (and coach) services maybe reducing their services this weekend, there will certainly be no reduction in blog posts.

Stay tuned as always a blog post each day.

I would also like to thank these blogs/websites for allowing me to use their content here:
1) Plymothian Transit
2) PCTPG

In particular without the above some info/pictures would not be possible

Edit: A previous version of this article said '270 KTA' had allowed me to use the content on the blog - this isn't the case and all articles in their full have been removed and instead there are links to the individual posts on that blog.

What could buses in Plymouth be like in the future?

Good evening everyone

Today I will predict what buses in Plymouth could be like in the future (not necessarily when)
- Drivers may stop accepting cash and/or better allow use of cards
- TVs in the bus displaying the news
- Longer single deckers (and even a return of the bendy buses)
- Triple decker buses (yep, that's possible)
- On average, longer legroom
- A return of the trams
- And even driverless buses

Disclaimer: Please note the information above is just the opinions of Buses around Plymouth and not necessarily facts (This blog post isn't a crystal ball, you know ;-))

Life after Plymouth Citybus for four Volvo B7Ls

Good evening everyone

The other week, you may remember me mentioning about four Volvo B7Ls owned by Target Travel:
More details can be found in this post (http://www.busesaroundplymouth.co.uk/2016/01/four-in-four-out.html)

Well, today I saw one of these buses still in the Perrys advert wrap, which was once registered X557 EGK, but now has a dateless registration. This bus has been a regular on the 47S since it entered service with Target Travel.
Above: A photo of the bus in question. (Plymothian Transit)

Now, I did mention there were four buses that got acquired by Target Travel. Two more of these got repainted into a new livery which I think is really smart and a good livery that stands out and suits these buses.
Above: A photo of these buses (Plymothian Transit)

Also, what do you think about the blog. Please spare some time to fill in the survey.

Buses around Plymouth Predictions for 2016

Good evening everyone

Today I would like to share my predictions for 2016.

Bus Companies:
Plymouth Citybus
- Seeing two B7RLEs (108 & 109) and some more Darts enter the swoops livery
- Some more buses (new or second hand) enter the fleet and maybe even some ADL Enviro 200MMC/400MMCs. If there are any more second hand buses, I predict they will be around 5-7 years old.

Stagecoach South West
- A greater presence in Plymouth
- ADL Enviro 400MMCs for the Gold and X38 (whether they'd be ones that are already in the fleet or new ones)
- Another 'Gold' route but this time within Plymouth

Target Travel
- Possibility on taking on at least 1 new route
- Hopefully some more buses, I wouldn't mind seeing some newer ADL Enviro 200s and Optare Solos

Other Independents
- Jacketts Coaches: The 13 won't be operated by them at the end of the year.
- Tally Ho & Countrybus: No real difference

And other predictions

New coach station
- Should hopefully be around by end of the year

The train station
- Hopefully at least some plans of what a refurbished station should look like

Buses around Plymouth
- More photos and presence at various bus related events around Plymouth

The answers will be revealed in late 2016/early 2017. Stay tuned for the answers then.

It was a blustery day on Wednesday

Good evening everyone

On Wednesday, there were high winds all around the city of Plymouth. Royal Parade was closed and bus operators and various bus operators and the council had this to say

Here is what Plymouth Citybus had to say
Royal Parade has been closed due to high winds and safety concerns. Please see below service information and diversions
5/5A, 21/21A, 50, 14:
Serving Cattedown, the viaduct, Vauxhall Street and the Reel Cinema at Derry’s Cross onto union Street
8/9, 34/24, 20/20A, 27/27A, 28, 16, 33:
Coming in onto the viaduct, turning at St Andrews Cross roundabout to head back out via Charles Street and Drake Circus
40/41, 42, 44, 46, 61/62:
Terminates at Charles Cross/ Art College and departs outside Primark
10, 11, 12, 32, 34/34A, 70, 71, 36, 51/51A, 72:
Terminates at the top of Union Street and departs outside Union Rooms
25:
Terminating and Departing at Union Rooms then up to Western Approach, to Drake Circus, the viaduct and will continue the normal route.
5A and 21A in from Devonport will serve Notte Street and go across the viaduct heading towards Plympton
Stagecoach services:
100: serving Mayflower Street, Drake Circus and the visduct
2: serving the viaduct and Derry's Cross
3, Gold, X38, 200: serving the viaduct
All information is correct at the time of notice:
09/03/16 at 18:00
And in addition Stagecoach services 1 and X1 pick ups were at Drake Circus
As well as this, Jacketts Coaches service 13 diverted to the viaduct
And Target travel mentioned the disruption but didn't go into specific details

And the council had this to say:
Royal Parade has now been closed on a temporary basis to traffic as a safety precaution following the damage to the Big Screen earlier this afternoon. Bus companies are currently making arrangements for alternative locations to drop off and pick up passengers who would normally use the bus stops along Royal Parade.
As there are a number of companies involved, we are asking the public to keep an eye on the companies’ social media feeds for more information. We anticipate that the wind will die down later this evening and we hope to remove parts of the structure which are hanging off if the wind dies out as expected. Conditions permitting, scaffolding will go up tomorrow for a more detailed assessment to be carried out.
We aim to let people know when the road will reopen as soon as we can.
We appreciate that this causes inconvenience and delays for people trying to get home after work but the safety of people walking, cycling and driving along this busy road has to be our top priority.

Did you see a land train in Plymouth yesterday?

Good evening everyone

I just wanted to make you aware of a news article in the Plymouth Herald yesterday

Land train takes to streets of Plymouth for first time

Did you spot this cruising around Plymouth city centre this morning? (That being yesterday)
A new land train has taken to our roads for the first time ahead of a commercial operation beginning at Easter.
PR company iMarvel shared pictures of the train on our roads this morning.
Plymouth briefly saw a landtrain project in 2005, but the scheme never took off.
Plymouth resident Graham Pearce announced in November he is setting up a land train which will carry up to 38 people with two carriages.

According to Mr Pearce, service is set to commence on the land train this nmonth.
Other areas around Devon and Cornwall such as Torquay, Exmouth and Newquay have land trains, making them a great tourist attraction which allows both residents and tourists to see the most of the landscape in these popular areas.
Plymouth briefly saw a land train come to the city in 2005 which was short lived, with many odds falling against the £210,000, 58-seater vehicle which eventually fizzled out three years later.
Taxifast mogul John Preece intended to run the land train around the city centre, Hoe and Barbican as a tourist attraction.
But he and the city council reached a Catch-22 impasse when the authority said he had to submit a route before he could run the triple-carriage vehicle and he argued he could not do so without testing it on the streets.

Further to the debacle the 20-metre vehicle lost its fuel supplier, meaning putting the 4.5-tonne engine on to a low loader once every two days and taking it away, for about an hour.

Three years later in 2008 the land train was scrapped due to it never having carried fee-paying passengers.

Mr Preece unveiled that he had an 'interested buyer' but no more was heard about the land train after this.

On 21st November, the Plymouth Landtrain Facebook put up a statement saying: "After a long while and a lot of searching I am really proud to announce that Plymouth land train is coming.
"Please support me in this new venture. With best wishes, Graham Pearce."
Dean Seddon from iMarvel confirmed that the land train was ready to hit the streets of Plymouth from Easter.
He said: "It has been a lot of work but the Land Train Project is ready to roll.
"We will be raising some sponsorship support to kick the Land Train off. One of the exciting developments will be the live tracker of the Land Train which will help people see when the train will arrive at their stop."
Te added: "The whole team are excited. We took some families out on a test route and we were swamped with children wanting to ride the train. Its fun for the families on the City but also a nice connection for visitors to Plymouth to see the sites and amazing places to visit in Plymouth."

If anyone saw the land train yesterday please let me know in the 'Comments' section underneath this article.
